Postdoctoral Researcher in Organic Geochemistry at the Department of Environmental Science
The Department of Environmental Science is one of the larger departments within the Faculty of Science.
The department consists of four units with over 170 employees including researchers, teachers, doctoral students, and technical/administrative staff from more than 30 different countries. Research and teaching are conducted in environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology, atmospheric science, and biogeochemistry. As a staff member at the Department of Environmental Science, you will be part of a dynamic environment with world-class research and a strong international character.
More information about us can be found at: https://www.su.se/institutionen-for-miljovetenskap/ (https://www.su.se/institutionen-for-miljovetenskap/).
Project Description
The Canadian Beaufort Shelf region is an ideal area to study the effects of sea-level rise and large freshwater inflow on Holocene primary production, sea ice extent, and ocean acidification. Concurrently, the shallow lakes in the Mackenzie region of the Northwest Territories (Canada) are at the forefront of recent climate change, with rising winter temperatures, altered timing of spring floods, and decreased precipitation. Scientific questions may also relate to changing methane dynamics in a changing Arctic.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for extracting and analyzing biomarkers from the Canadian Arctic. Samples are available from previous expeditions (Warm COCOA, FLO CHAR, PeCaBeau), but there is also an opportunity to participate in new expeditions to collect specific samples. The research will involve extensive laboratory work, including the use of gas chromatography and stable isotope methods (GC, GC-IRMS, GC-MS). This will also include the development of new methods with the support of experienced technicians. We are particularly interested in new and exciting biomarker methods such as (but not limited to) bacteriohopanpolyol (BHP) as well as the concentration of levoglucosan in marine and lake sediments, hydrogen isotope ratios in sterols and alkenones, carbon isotope ratios in GDGTs, and compound-specific radiocarbon analysis. The scientific interest can range from contemporary environmental issues to reconstructions of paleoclimate.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a completed PhD or foreign degree deemed equivalent to a relevant PhD is required. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made.
Assessment Criteria
It is meritorious if the PhD or equivalent has been completed no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an earlier degree may also be considered meritorious. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, union duties, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments in the subject area.
We are looking for a flexible and motivated candidate who is interested in developing within a new research group in an established institution. The candidate should have a PhD in organic geochemistry, environmental science, geoscience, chemistry, or a related field, preferably with prior experience in the analysis of organic compounds. An interest in paleoclimatology and/or aquatic geochemistry is expected. Since you will be working in an international environment, the ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team as well as good communication skills, including fluency in English, are crucial. The selection will be based on the quality and ambition of the scientific interest, scientific publications, references, and interview.
About the Position
The position is full-time and is permanent, but at least two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Start date 2025-12-01 or by agreement.
